A common thread on all the Los Angeles blogs today is the recent disclosure that the city received 320 complaints of racial profiling by the police department last year. Each complaint was cleared and deemed without merit. For the sixth straight year... Hmm... You can read more about it at the Daily News's It's a Crime blog.
Meanwhile, the LAPD blog notes that crime is down ... again. Which is great news, although the crime figures are not down for me personally.
I was reminded last week that my new city still has a ways to go catch up with NYC -- the safest urban area in the country. In Silver Lake last Thursday, I parked on a well-lit street, spent the next two hours with friends inside the El Cid, and then came back to my car to find my passenger window bashed out.
Mercifully, the bastards didn't steal my car or my laptop, or do any other damage besides the broken window. (Thanks Saab security system and bottom ignition!)
If I wasn't loving it out here in L.A. so much, I suppose I'd have been a lot angrier. As it was, my sweetheart of a Swedish mechanic seamlessly installed a used window for a great price. The Saab is good as new and the ocean is still 30 blocks from my house. I'm not complaining...
